December and 2022 are in the rearview mirror. It was a heck of a rollercoaster year for investments, the year started off with steep sell off and quick market decline that didn’t seem to slow down. Then came the summer and things seemed to stabilize for some weeks before volatility returned and it was a flip of the coin on which way the market would go. When evaluating my portfolio I had some things I wanted to change.
When I began the dividend journey I picked up some REITs (O & Stag) but I was holding them in my after tax account and with the dividends being taxed as ordinary income I wanted to move future REIT investments into my Roth account. I liquidated my positions and reallocated those funds into other sectors and for REIT exposure will hold them in my Roth. The good news is I sold both holdings at or above my cost basis. I also sold a handful of NVDA shares above my cost basis when they peaked in mid December. I still hold some NVDA in my Roth, wanted to move the small after tax position into a divided payer.
Sold
- O $2654
- Stag $1754
- NVDA $1445
Replaced with
- 40 Shares of MDT
- 5 Shares of ABT
- 20 Shares of KR
- 5 shares of UNP
- 1 Share of AAPL
In total I dropped PADI by $57, but now the portfolios are structured how I want them.
My other transaction to end the year was with Verizon (VZ) it’s taken a beating since I purchased it. I waited a bit too long but I decided to tax loss harvest with intentions of getting back into the position at a lower cost basis. It held $34 to $36 price range for a few months and of coarse after I sell it’s been on an uptick. I still intend to get back in once my 30 day Wash period is over, but might do wo with some Cash Secure Puts and collect premiums until I’m assigned.
Dividend Income
December not only ends the year but it’s also the end a quarter. A majority of companies pay out at quarter end and so do ETF’s and Mutual Funds. I was paid $791.75 in dividends from 24 holdings with ETF SCHD being the largest payout.
