May 2023 Portfolio Review

Posted on June 17, 2023 by invspot

My apologies for the late update, life and work has been busy and as the weather improves I tend to spend more time outdoors and enjoy it while it lasts. My overall performance was slightly down for the month at -1.62% but up or down those dividend keep rolling in and that’s all the matters.

Dividends Received

The middle month of the quarters are slow as far as dividends are concerned. This month the portfolio generated $231.26 from 11 holdings and that is a 22% increase over last year. I added onto my SBUX position to write covered calls and that boosted my payout by $45. With that addition in made Starbucks also my largest payout for the month at $53.19.

Monthly Purchases

My weekly ~$300 investments went into these positions:

4 Shares of ABT
4 Shares of JNJ
4 Shares of UNP
5 Shares of NEE
2 Shares of KR
2 Shares of TXN
2 Shares of UPS

Also added 10 shares of VICI in my Roth and 1 share of TD in my wife Roth – these are funded from options premiums.

I had some extra funds become available and put them to good use.

Total invested for the month of $2939.11 adding $219.35 in PADI.

Dividend Increases

I had two of my holdings announce a dividend increase.

Apple AAPL with a 4.35% increase

Medtronic MDT with a token 1.5% increase

Lowes LOW with a 5% increase

Paramount PARA with a dreaded 80% cut. This was a speculative play on my part and it has taken a beating, especially after the cut announcement. I will continue to write covered calls until it gets assigned unless I see a better opportunity and just take the loss and move on.

Options Income

For May I generated a total of $260 in options premiums. It was a slow month as I did not have the time to monitor positions and if you can’t watch your open trades it can end up costing you money or getting stuck with a position for an extended time.

Year to date I have generated $2539 in premiums on $25,000 in capital. A 10% return on my money, not to mention those premiums then get reinvested into my portfolio boosting the return even higher.

Wrapping it up!

As mentioned earlier we increased PADI by $219.35 a 3.82% increase from the previous month. My projected PADI stands at $5960.57 or $496 a month, quickly approaching my $6,000 goal. My trailing 12 month payout is at $416 per month.
